Determining an Improved Traffic Conflict Indicator for Highway Safety Estimation Based on Vehicle Trajectory Data

Currently, several traffic conflict indicators are used as surrogate safety measures. Each indicator has its own advantages, limitations, and suitability. There only a few studies focusing on fixed object conflicts of highway estimation using technique. This study investigated which was more suitable for based conflict-accident Pearson correlation analysis. First, high-altitude unmanned aerial vehicle to collect multiple continuous high-precision videos the Jinan-Qingdao highway. The trajectory data outputted from recognition were acquire following procedure each indicator. Then, an improved Ti proposed advantages limitations conventional indicators. contained definitions calculation three types (rear-end, lane change with object). Then analysis TTC (Time Collision)/PET (Post Encroachment Time)/DRAC (Deceleration Rate Avoid Crash)/Ti carried out. results show that average value coefficient different thresholds 0.670 TTC, 0.669 PET, 0.710 DRAC, 0.771 Ti, is obviously higher than other findings this suggest often fails identify conflicts, PET easily misjudges some rear-end when speed slower leading vehicle, less informative At same time, these do not consider vehicle-fixed objects conflicts. can overcome shortcomings; thus, highest correlation. More needed verify support study.
